REGULATIONS OF THE V  INTERNATIONAL

MUSIC COMPETITION

«Baltic Stars»

 

The Competition takes place in the city of Narva, Estonia from the 22th till the 29th of November 2014.

The music competition is addressed to the young musicians of all specialties. Its aim is to develop international communication, to find gifted and perspective young performers, to give people an opportunity to learn about the teaching traditions and new methods of different countries and regions, to encourage creative self-expression and professional improvement.

The competition has the following nominations and age groups:

1. «Piano – solo performance»:

Category  «A» from 6 till 10 years 10 – 15 min.
Category  «B» from 11 till 14 years 15 – 20 min.
Category «C» from 15 till 19 years 20 – 25 min.
Category «D» from 20 till 25 years 25 – 30 min.
Category «E» from 26 till 40 years 30 – 40 min.

 

2. «Stringed instruments» – violin, viola, violoncello, contrabass:

Category  «A» from  6 till 10 years 10 – 15 min.
Category  «B» from 11 till 14 years 15 – 20 min.
Category «C» from 15 till 19 years 20 – 25 min.
Category «D» from 20 till 25 years 25 – 30 min.
Category «E» from 26 till 40 years 30 – 40 min.

 

3.”Wind instruments” – brass and wooden:

Category  «A» from   6 till 10 years 10 – 15 min.
Category  «B» from 11 till 14 years 15 – 20 min.
Category «C» from 15 till 19 years 20 – 25 min.
Category «D» from 20 till 25 years 25 – 30 min.
Category «E» from 26 till 40 years 30 – 40 min.

 

The participants of the 1, 2, 3 nominations should perform one classical piece (mandatory!), the rest of the program is free, possibly reflecting the individuality of the performer.

 

4. «Chamber music»

 

a. Chamber ensembles (stringed, wind, clavier) – from a sonata pair to a sextet inclusive

 

b. Instrumental ensembles (stringed, wind, percussion, mixed, folk instruments of the academic type) – up to 8 participants

 

Category  «A» up to 16 years 10 – 15 min.
Category  «B» up to 20 years 15 – 20 min.
Category «C» up to 25 years 20 – 25 min.
Category «D» up to 40 years 25 – 30 min.

Participants of the nomination «Chamber ensemble» may perform in any genres and styles, author’s arrangements are allowed.

 

 

5. «Vocal – academic singing»:

 

Category  «A» up to 16 years 12 – 15 min.
Category  «B» up to 20 years 15 – 18 min.
Category «C» up to 25 years 18 – 20 min.
Category «D» No age limit 20 – 25 min.

Vocalists should include one aria by any composer into their programme, the rest of the programme is free.

 

6. Ensemble classical singing – chamber and opera ensembles (up to a quartet inclusive)

Category  «A» up to 17 years up to 10 min.
Category  «B» up to 26 years up to 20 min.
Category «C» No age limit up to 30 min.

 

7. Choirs (single-sex and mixed)

Youth choirs up to 26 years up to 15 min.
No age limit up to 25 min.

 

8. Orchestras – chamber, small symphonic, wind, folk instruments of the academic type, other single-sex or mixed formations

Youth orchestras up to 26 years up to  15 min.
No age limit up to 25 min.

 

9. Accompaniment – no age limits.

 

10. «Light music songs».

 

No age limits, duration of the program – 15 minutes.

Participants perform using a backing track (CD). Both soloists and light music ensembles may perform in this nomination.

 

11. “Folklore”.

Category “A” – up to 18 years, duration of the program  – 15 minutes

Category “B” – no age limit  –  20-25 minutes

 

In this nomination the participants perform both in vocal, and in instrumental genres. Solo performances and ensembles of any type are allowed, including vocal singing with a folklore instrument. It is possible to use a backing track (CD). It is preferable to use original folklore music.

The competition is held  in one round (except for the listed below) in the form of  big mixed concerts. Candidates should perform within the time limits. If the time is exceeded  – the Jury will take one point off a participant’s total score.

In the nominations “Vocal – classical singing” and “Ensemble classical singing” only for the II group the competition is divided in two rounds of the equal duration; the first round – qualification. It is preferable to perform in the different genres and styles (a song, a romance, a canzonet, an aria or a scene, etc, and, accordingly, chamber ensemble, opera ensemble or a scene, a part/part of a cantata, an oratorio, a mass, a requiem, passions, etc.) It is not allowed to repeat pieces from the Ist round.

In the nominations “Piano – solo performance”, “Stringed instruments”, “Wind instruments” only for pianists, violinists, viola players and violoncellists, contrabass players, brass and wooden wind instruments for categories “D” and “Е” competition is set in two rounds of equal duration.

I round – qualification:

A polyphonic piece – from baroque to the present time

Masterly etude/caprice/toccata

Sonata (a part, parts) or a concert (a part, parts) – from classics to the present time

II round: the play of the large form

One or several pieces of  the participant’s choice, keeping within the time limit. Repetition of piece from the Ist round is not allowed.

 

A participant may register in one and more nomination. The entrance fee – 50 euros for each participant. The entrance fee to the 4th and the 8th sections — 100 euros regardless of the number of the participants of an ensemble.

The Jury consists of the well-known professors– musicians from the different countries, the decision of the Jury is final and is not the subject of appeal.

The first finalists are those who get not less than 95/100 marks.

The first finalists are those who get not less than 90/100 marks.

The first finalists are those who get not less than 85/100 marks.

Those who get less than 80/100 marks, receive the participation certificates.

 

The highest award of the competition is the «Grand – Prix».
